Kovalam is an  internationally famed beach destination situated south of the capital city of Kerala,  Thiruvananthapuram. With three adjacent crescent beaches - Lighthouse beach,  Eve’s or Howah beach and the Ashok beach, Kovalam has been a favourite haunt of  tourists since the 1930s.

This charming beach  destination gained attention after the Regent Maharani
  Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, a  member of the Royal Family of Travancore erected her beach resort, Halcyon Castle, here in the late 1920s. Since  then Kovalam is considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations in the  city of Thiruvananthapuram.
The European guests of  the then Travancore kingdom also found Kovalam as a potential beach destination,  which actually shot into limelight in the early seventies when hippies who were  on their way to Ceylon  in the Hippie Trail arrived here.
Kovalam offers three  major beaches in its coastline. The Lighthouse   Beach located on the  southernmost part is the most popular of the three. Other beaches include Howah Beach  and the Samudra Beach. The Samudra beach gets crowded  with travelers especially during weekends and is very popular with the locals  and day-travellers.
